Buying guide
How much should a wheelchair weigh?
The number that decides whether the chair gets used. What is light, what is liftable, and where the weight actually goes.
Weight is the specification that quietly decides everything else, because a chair nobody can lift is a chair that stays in the hall.
The bands that matter
- Under 20 lb. One person can lift this into a boot without planning it. The Feather Chair sits at 13.5 lb with the rear wheels off, which is the lightest folding chair in production.
- 20 to 30 lb. Liftable by most adults, awkward for some. The Karman Ergo Flight is 19.8 lb and buys you a much better seat for the extra weight.
- 30 lb and up. This is the standard hospital-issue range. Perfectly fine if the chair lives in one place and is never lifted. A serious problem otherwise.
The trick nobody explains
Published weights often quote the chair with the rear wheels removed, because quick-release wheels come off in a second and take several pounds with them. That is a legitimate number if the wheels genuinely detach, and it means you lift two light objects instead of one heavy one. Check whether the figure you are comparing includes them.
What you give up to go light
Lighter frames are generally lighter duty. A 13 lb chair is built for transport and appointments, not for eight hours a day. If the chair is someone's primary seating for most of their waking hours, weight stops being the top priority and frame quality, seating and fit take over.
The honest test
Have the person who will actually load it lift it, at the boot, once. Not in a showroom, not in theory. That single test predicts whether the purchase works better than any specification on the page.
General information, not medical advice. If fit, posture, pressure relief or fall risk is part of your decision, speak to an occupational therapist.
